Abstract
Founded in 2015, Orange Dental initially targeted middle-class adults with its first clinic in Tianjin but struggled to differentiate itself in a competitive market. Following extensive market research, the three founders decided to shift their focus to pediatric dentistry. By prioritizing a positive and enjoyable dental experience for children, the company quickly earned the trust of both parents and young patients. By August 2022, it had expanded to 12 stores across Shanghai, Tianjin, and Nanjing, with a membership base of over 30,000—primarily from well-educated, high-income families with children aged 1 to 14. The core demographic consisted of children aged 3 to 6, with an average annual spending of approximately 2,000 yuan per customer.
Looking ahead, the company aims to extend its reach to provide enjoyable dental care to more children. It recently began expanding into second- and third-tier cities such as those in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, while also enhancing services for its original customers who are now entering adolescence. Ta envisions Orange Dental evolving from a high-end clinic serving a privileged few (the “Disney model”) into a widely trusted provider of pediatric dentistry for the broader population (the “McDonald’s model”), offering standardized services at affordable prices. Inspired by U.S. practices, the company is also considering ways to reach more children through dental insurance. With these possibilities in mind, which path should Orange Dental pursue to sustain its future growth?
